Bangladesh Nationalist Party, abbreviated as the BNP, is the major political party in Bangladesh. The party was founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman Biruttam on Sep 1, 1978 who promulgated the declaration of the country’s independence on March 27, 1971 and also known as the architect of modern Bangladesh.

The party envisions uniting the people with the ‘Bangladeshi Nationalism’ ideology. Since then, the BNP won the second, fifth, sixth and eighth national elections and two Presidential elections in 1978 and 1981. The party also holds the record of being the largest opposition party in the history of parliamentary elections of the country, with 116 seats in the seventh national election of June 1996.
