REINTRODUCTION OF MULTIPARTY DEMOCRACY

BNP founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman re-introduced democracy in the country by ending the one-party Bakshal system. He removed the garbage of Bakshal and allowed all political parties to do politics within the systematic framework. Even the Awami League, which was dissolved under Bakshal, was revived and created an opportunity to do politics. All political parties including BNP, Awami League, Muslim League, Jasad, Jamaat-e-Islami, Communist Party took part in the second national election held in 1979. BNP won absolute majority in that election. In the period 1991-96, the BNP government led by Begum Khaleda Zia introduced a parliamentary system of government in the country by passing the Twelfth Amendment to the Constitution in the National Assembly with the aim of consolidating democracy. To ensure the participation of the opposition parties in the governance of the country, Parliamentary Standing Committees are formed with the members of the opposition parties. Besides, Begum Khaleda Zia introduced non-party caretaker government system in 1996 reflecting public opinion. At that time, the state power was transferred for the first time in the history of Bangladesh by protecting democracy and constitutional continuity.
